About the Album

"Zamba del Chaguanco" is the second single from PEOPLE. PLACES. Music for Large Ensemble, the upcoming album by Argentinian composer and guitarist Martín Iaies, to be released by Challenge Records on August 21.

Originally composed by the legendary Argentine pianist Hilda Herrera, it is the only piece on the album not written by Iaies himself. Drawn to the composition from the very first time he heard it, he arranged it early in the development of the large ensemble, seeking to preserve the essence of the traditional zamba—its lyrical character, quiet intensity and underlying sense of melancholy—while opening new harmonic and rhythmic possibilities through the language of contemporary jazz.

The recording features three outstanding soloists: German saxophonist Klaus Gesing on soprano saxophone, Spanish flugelhorn player Jordi Roviró, and Austrian drummer Andreas Reisenhofer, whose improvisations emerge naturally from the written material and contribute to the piece's gradual emotional arc.
