Jazzelectro Sounds: Live from Birmingham, England

Read "Jazzelectro Sounds: Live from Birmingham, England" reviewed by Martin Longley

Birmingham, EnglandMarch 2008Electric Kulintang at the CBSO CentreNew York percussionist Susie Ibarra last came to the CBSO Centre with trumpeter Dave Douglas, when he was premiering his Blue Latitudes piece with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. That gig found her in both composed and improvised states, but this time Ibarra's been asked back to present the Electric Kulintang project, an investigation of her Philippine heritage, in partnership with Cuban husband Roberto Rodriguez. Despite being an active hands-on ...

EK electric kulintang: Dialects

Read "Dialects" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Susie Ibarra and Mephista: Folkloriko & Entomological Reflections

Read "Susie Ibarra and Mephista: Folkloriko & Entomological Reflections" reviewed by Sean Patrick Fitzell

As a composer, improviser, bandleader or member, drummer-percussionist Susie Ibarra displays a holistic approach to music, playing her parts to support the larger musical vision. Two recent and divergent recordings showcase her broad musical palate.

Susie Ibarra Folkloriko Tzadik 2004

Folkloriko , Ibarra's latest as a leader, opens with “Anitos," an exotic percussion duet with Roberto Rodriguez. Set over a relentless “tribal" groove, it highlights Ibarra's melodic playing on wooden kulintang, a traditional Asian ...

Susie Ibarra Trio: Songbird Suite

Read "Songbird Suite" reviewed by Farrell Lowe

Songbird Suite offers some of the most direct and heartfelt music you could ever want to hear. Honestly. The depth of these pieces is reflected in just about every aspect of recording. For instance, the very title of the album acts as a unifying theme throughout the individual pieces. Every song seems imbued with bird-like qualities... a spiralling/elliptical rhythm pattern in many of these pieces suggests the wiry sophistication of a warbler; Craig Taborn's piano themes and electronic textures possess ...

Susie Ibarra: Flower after Flower

Read "Flower after Flower" reviewed by Micah Holmquist

Susie Ibarra uses Flower after Flower to further explore many of the themes that she began to look at last year with Radiance. The exploration of non-western rhythms and dreamy soundscapes remain in place as does an undeniably playful sprit. These qualities only appear together on a few occasions, however. Most of the time, they come and go based on the whims of each player and the general message that they are trying to express within Ibarra’s compositions.

The key ...

Susie Ibarra & Assif Tsahar: Home Cookin'

Read "Home Cookin'" reviewed by AAJ Staff

New York drummer Susie Ibarra gained a notorious reputation for her versatility and touch while working with free jazz musicians like David S. Ware, Matthew Shipp, and William Parker. Tenor saxophonist Assif Tsahar also played with Parker, in addition to making his own records on Silkheart and Eremite. This married couple celebrates the genesis of their very own record label with a new duet recording, Home Cookin'.

The aptly titled work alternates between saxophone/drum duets (recorded February '98 at the ...
