Phil Grenadier / Bruno Raberg Duo: Plunge
by Florence Wetzel
Plunge is a captivating CD that features the formidable duo of bassist Bruno Råberg and trumpeter Phil Grenadier. Each musician brings to the table their unique background and decades of experience: Råberg hails from Sweden, and in his twenties he played with the cream of Swedish jazz musicians, including trombonist Eje Thelin, pianist Bobo Stenson and renowned singer Monica Zetterlund. With the magic of Scandinavian jazz firmly in his bones, Råberg emigrated to America in the early eighties, and since ...

Part adlib verse and part haiku poetry, Plunge is, above all, a study of sound and its ability to conjure images and emotions. A collaborative effort by Swedish born bassist Bruno Råberg and trumpeter Phil Grenadier, Plunge's nineteen short pieces range from intricately impressionistic to deeply expressive abstractions. On Last Train To Seville," Grenadier overdubs his trumpet with it is own echo, simulating the locomotive's piercing horn but with a sense of angst and ...

Swedish-born and now Boston-based bassist Bruno Råberg explores meditative soundscapes with a flexible free improvisation approach in a variety of ensemble sizes. On Presence (Orbis Records, 2000) he featured a trio lineup. Chrysalis (Orbis Records, 2004) showcased an all-star nonet; and on his sprawling two disc Lifelines (Orbis Records, 2008) he employed a quartet. With Plunge though, he pares things down to an intimate duo setting, teaming with trumpeter Phil Grenadier for the most modern sounding outing in his discography.

Soundacapes, most of them were manipulated afterwards with different effects and three were double duo" improvisations that interacted with first versions of the improvisation. Still, the melodic element invariably surfaces, with Råberg symbolizing this process as a lonely person's inner ...

3Play+ are a quartet, featuring trumpeter Phil Grenadier, pianist Josh Rosen, bassist Lello Molinari and drummer Marcello Pellitteri. Originally a trio, the band became 3Play+ with the addition of Grenadier; presumably the idea of calling the band 4Play was dismissed at an early stage. On the group's debut, American Waltz, it is joined on some tracks by guitarist Mick Goodrick and tenor saxophonist George Garzone. Rosen and Molinari are both professors at Boston's Berklee College of Music. ...

The music of a band is determined by its players. 3 Play+ assimilates its diverse influences to bring about a confluent whole. The music scopes a wide panorama, from lilting waltz to startlingly fractured-time piece. Each track is a miniature encapsulation of its innovation, an inspired journey into the known and the unexpected.
3 Play+ is co-led by pianist Josh Rosen and bassist Lello Molinari. Rosen's musical biography is a cross-cultural musical travelogue; besides playing with Bennie Wallace and The ...
