Mose Allison: The Mose Chronicles, Volume 1

Read "The Mose Chronicles, Volume 1" reviewed by Dave Nathan

Few white performers have captured the soul, heart and emotion of the blues better than Jack Teagarden and Mose Allison. With Volume One in the title as well as the expectations created by the word Chronicles, this release should be the first of other releases by Blue Note documenting the contributions Mose Allison has made to jazz and blues over the more than 40 years of his career.

This album captures a live performance at the Pizza Express in London. ...

Mose Allison: The Mose Chronicles Volume One

Read "The Mose Chronicles Volume One" reviewed by AAJ Staff

Mose Allison is amazing. The pianist/singer/songwriter has now been plying his craft for 50 years, and this first volume of The Mose Chronicles, which documents a January 2000 trio gig in London, shows no diminution of his powers.

Start with his piano playing: His ambling runs on “Entruption,” which opens the disc, have the suave rhythmic sophistication of Erik Satie’s piano music, while his harmonic palette is that of a pianist who revels in the joy of his instrument’s tone. ...

Mose Allison: The Mose Chronicles: Live In London, Volume 1

Read "The Mose Chronicles: Live In London, Volume 1" reviewed by Jim Santella

Recorded last January at The Pizza Express in London, The Mose Chronicles represents the kind of performance Mose Allison offers in locations around the globe. Volume one and its to-be-released companion album concentrate on Allison’s older material; songs that his audience remembers. A massage from ...

Recorded between 1963 and 1968, four of Mose Allison's Atlantic LPs are placed on one two-CD package, presented with their original liner notes and remastered sound: Swingin' Machine, The Word From Mose, Wild Man On The Loose, and I've Been Doin' Some Thinkin'. On the first session, Allison used a quintet; the others are with bass and drums only. Allison's piano style is lively and forged out of boogie-woogie, stride piano, and the blues; he likes to make mention of ...

Mose Allison: Gimcracks and Gewgaws

Read "Gimcracks and Gewgaws" reviewed by Jim Santella

In person, Mose Allison walks through the audience having a good time, meeting people and enjoying conversations prior to sitting down at the piano. Loose and relaxed, you'd never know he was the featured performer if you hadn't seen his photograph, and Allison seems to feel that everyone is his best friend. That message comes across in his music, too, of course. This latest release is 45 minutes of Allison's dry wit, his matching piano and vocal styles, and some ...
