Few ECM artists, barring perhaps longtime label stalwart, pianist Keith Jarrett, have been afforded the opportunity of releasing two albums within the same calendar year. That Manfred Eicher has chosen to follow up Jakob Bro's impressive quartet date, Returnings, less than seven months later with Bay of Rainbows clearly speaks to the label head/primary producer's appreciation for the guitarist's work. Bro may not be an overtly virtuosic player (though he's clearly capable of more than he largely lets on), but ...

Danish guitarist Jakob Bro returns with another album made by his working trio with double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron, previously heard on Streams (ECM, 2016). The repertoire mainly documents Bro originals that the trio has been playing for years, most of them predating his ECM albums as leader. Opener Mild" was first recorded on ...

Danish guitarist Jakob Bro reunites with double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Jon Christensen--the trio that recorded his ECM debut Gefion (ECM, 2015)--and adds veteran ECM stalwart trumpeter/flugelhornist Palle Mikkelborg to the mix. Usually adding a horn would make a group sound brasher, but most of the time Mikkelborg seems to have brought out Bro's introspective, atmospheric tendencies even more than the trio recordings. The connection to Gefion is made immediately with the opening track Oktober," reprised from ...

Danish guitarist Jakob Bro's second ECM album as leader continues with the trio concept of his debut Gefion (ECM, 2015). That album was a low-key stunner, with drummer Jon Christensen frequently taking a role as much textural as rhythmic. Streams is a somewhat more extroverted affair. It's tempting to attribute the change to new drummer Joey Baron--who has proven himself to be a very adaptable musical partner--but credit must also be given to Bro's evolving interaction with bassist Thomas Morgan, ...

"The music wants to go in its own direction," Jakob Bro declares, and it's our job to follow it." If one central theme of jazz is never the same way once," the Danish guitarist is someone who lives by it more than most. No two of his albums are made with the same cast and rarely do they repeat the same instrumental lineup. A given release may feature a quartet, nonet or fifteen-piece ensemble; there could be three horns or ...
