Jake Hertzog is a guitarist who crosses the threshold into the jazz and jazz-fusion radar with the advent of this impressive 2009 studio set. Hertzog is a Berklee College of Music graduate and, at nineteen years-old, won the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival's Grand Prize in the Jazz Guitar Competition. He communicates a broad music vernacular here, within a comfort zone provided by the superfine rhythm section that includes pianist Michael Wolff on three pieces.

Twenty-two year old guitarist Jake Hertzog, a native of Champaign, Illinois, delivers a truck-load of youthful energy for his power trio release, Chromatosphere. The Berklee College of Music Graduate is helped out on the self-produced, chops-heavy session by bassist Harvie S and drummer Victor Jones. Pianist Michael Wolff joins in on three tracks.

Jake Hertzog's Chromatosphere (That's Out Records, 2008) presents the brilliant young guitar picker at his best in a talented combo of New York sidemen. At 22, Hertzog is just beginning his career, and the release--his first--is clearly intended to draw attention and establish his name, with strong compositional statements and clever covers of classic tunes.
