Francois Carrier: Open Spaces

by Budd Kopman
With Open Spaces, Francois Carrier has given us an opportunity to hear him paired with the magnificent Dewey Redman, recorded over two nights live in Quebec City in 1999. Carrier's usual drummer, Michel Lambert, provides powerhouse support on both nights, while bassist Michel Donato plays on track one and Ron Seguin on tracks two and three. This release, which was also mastered and produced by Carrier, is essentially a homage to Redman. Redman, who died last September ...

Listeners who have followed multiple reed player François Carrier, particularly his two 2004 releases Play (482 Music) and Traveling Lights (Justin Time), will welcome this double-CD offering on Leo. Not only is Happening a double dose of outstanding freely improvised (as opposed to free") jazz, but it is recorded live. Carrier's long-time trio partners Pierre Cote (bass) and Michel Lambert (drums) join him, plus Mat Maneri on viola and Uwe Neumann on various Indian instruments, including sitar and anandolohori (Indian ...

Somehow all those ...

Dream teams do not necessarily turn out to be worthy of high expectations. If there is no empathy and the players do not feel that invisible electric impulse, all can be lost. But that is not the case here. Michel Lambert has been the drummer of choice for Fran'ois Carrier and there is a natural exchange of ideas between them; they know each other, which makes a difference. Paul Bley and Gary Peacock, on the other hand, are ...

by Rick Bruner
Intuition is the second release from the Francois Carrier Trio. They perform frequently in Quebec City and it’s a treat to be able to hear these outstanding Canadian musicians. Mr. Carrier plays impassioned alto saxophone in a program of deeply emotional and spontaneous incantations. His band mates (Pierre Cote, bass, and Francois Cote, drums) provide intuitive support and excellent solos. The band has been working together for several years and have developed an impressive empathy.
The music on this 77 ...
