David Sanchez: Cultural Survival

Read "Cultural Survival" reviewed by Chris May

It's been almost four years since saxophonist David Sanchez released Coral (Columbia, 2004), the disc which marked the end of an eleven year relationship with Sony Music--and it's wonderful to have his big, singing, prolix tenor back, on song and kicking.

Sanchez has not been idle since Coral, touring extensively with his own band, on a world tour with singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, and on a US tour with guitarist Pat Metheny. He also gave a few headline ...

David Sanchez: Coral

Read "Coral" reviewed by Andrew Durkin

David Sanchez's Coral is the latest in what has turned out to be a somewhat lonely genre: the orchestral jazz album, in which a soloist is placed against a backdrop of strings (think Sketches of Spain , Focus , or Charlie Parker with Strings ). It's an airy, lush, thoughtful work, with a program that is a fascinating mix of South American composers influenced by French Impressionists, performed by a Puerto Rican saxophonist with a Czech orchestra in tow (whew!). ...

David Sanchez: A Candid Look at Music and Business Part 2-2

Part 1 | Part 2

It's hard to gauge what the jazz community knows about saxophonist David Sanchez. If you have BET Jazz, you may have seen him on those corny interludes - “How did you discover your sense of jazz?" Albeit, a lot of people I've talked to, know very little about Sanchez. “Go look at the records - then you'll see I've been around for quite a while," says Sanchez in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel in ...

David Sanchez: Coral

Read "Coral" reviewed by Joel Roberts

If he's not already there, David Sanchez's new album should secure the Puerto Rican-born tenor saxophonist's place among the very top younger jazz artists working today. Blending bebop, Latin and classical elements, Coral is the most ambitious, mature, genre-stretching musical statement of the 35-year-old's already noteworthy career. Recorded in the Czech Republic with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra alongside Sanchez's own inventive sextet, Coral dramatically reinterprets the work of contemporary Latin American composers both familiar (Jobim, Villa ...

David Sanchez: Coral

Read "Coral" reviewed by AAJ Staff

With Coral , explosive tenor saxophonist David Sanchez records with a symphony orchestra, playing Carlos Franzetti arrangements of “Latin classical" pieces by composers as diverse as Villa-Lobos and Jobim. Alongside the plush strings, Sanchez has banked his fires a bit, but he does take some typically vigorous workouts here.

Sanchez continues to develop and refine a personal sound and style. He's always played exciting music, but his sound has gotten lighter, more transparent, and he's become more lyrical. ...

David Sánchez Coral Columbia Records 2004

I once loaned my cherished copy of Clifford Brown with Strings to a German friend who had loaned me Dexter Gordon's Ballads in return. When it came time to reclaim our respective CDs, I asked her what she thought of the Brownie disc. “Very pretty," she said, “but a bit kitsch."

This duality has plagued the whole ...with Strings franchise (Cannonball, Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, and so on) ...
