Young Puerto Rican-born guitarist Gabriel Vicens unveils his second album as leader with the audacious Days documenting a nine-piece program of infectious modern jazz with a touch of the Latin flavor to make it interesting and quite appealing. A rising jazz guitarist who graduated from Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico and currently serves as a Professor at Universidad Interamericana in San Juan, Gabriel Vicens's sophomore release Days exuberantly articulates the soundtrack of his life. This follow up to his 2012 self-produced Point in Time shows personal growth and expression with its contagious hooks and spacious compositions brought by a gifted ensemble that includes talented Puerto Rican musicians and notables saxophonist David Sanchez, trumpeter/co-producer Alex Sipiagin, and Carlos ...

Gabriel Vicens: Point in Time

Read "Point in Time" reviewed by Jeff Dayton-Johnson

On Point In Time, his debut date as a leader, Puerto Rican guitarist Gabriel Vicéns heads a solid quintet of young players, considerably bolstered by a couple of A-list substitutions from the highest echelons of Puerto Rican jazz: tenor saxophonist David Sánchez on a pair of tracks, and bassist Eddie Gomez on about half the record.Vicéns' guitar is ringing and clear, relying on relatively low-tech reverb. His personality as an improviser is already sure and well-defined; he is ...

Gabriel Vicens: Point in Time

Read "Point in Time" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

When Berklee beckons, most aspiring jazz musicians pick themselves up and trek to Boston to further their studies, but guitarist Gabriel Vicens isn't most people. While the young guitarist had a scholarship lined up at that venerable learning institution, he opted to stay in his native habitat and study at the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico. Over the course of his years there, Vicens developed a distinct tone that cuts, yet remains warm, round and focused. He also created a ...

Gabriel Vicens: Point in Time

Read "Point in Time" reviewed by Andrew J. Sammut

Gabriel Vicens brings together simpatico colleagues from the scene in his native Puerto Rico and beyond to explore twelve of his works on the guitarist and composer's debut, Point in Time. Vicens' compositions explore quirky, catchy heads ("Point in Time," “Beautiful Place"), plenty of vamps ("La Diferencia," “Frame of Mind" and “El Camino") and medium tempo grooves blending straight-ahead and Latin rhythms ("El Comienzo," “Cuadro"). He also includes brief, abstract introductions to several tunes by one to two players.

David Sanchez: Ninety-Mile Bridge

Read "David Sanchez: Ninety-Mile Bridge" reviewed by Ian Patterson

What, besides music, transcends geopolitical divides so gracefully? What else unites people of different nationalities, political persuasions and religious creeds in common celebration just quite as harmoniously? Religions may have captured the hearts and minds of the majority of the planet's people, but remain bastions of ultra-conservatism and mistrust, despite all the rhetoric to the contrary. Sport too, may mobilize greater numbers of people than music, but all too often descends into ugly tribalism. The hippy generation may have got ...

David Sanchez: Cultural Survival

Read "Cultural Survival" reviewed by Brandt Reiter

Never one to play it safe, the adventurous Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sánchez has switched record labels, leaving Sony Music after a fruitful 11-year stint that culminated in a Latin Grammy for Coral, his 2004 CD of Latin classics with strings. He’s also revamped his band--out is longtime alto sax associate Miguel Zenón (who’s since emerged as a terrific leader in his own right); replacing him in the ensemble’s frontline is the young Norwegian guitarist Lage Lund, winner of the ...
