Charles Lloyd: Hyperion With Higgins
by AAJ Staff
Charles Lloyd won widespread acclaim for his recent Water is Wide, recorded in 1999. That record set high standards for any sequel; and now Lloyd offers Hyperion With Higgins, recorded during the same week in Los Angeles. The title of this disc pays explicit respect to the late Billy Higgins, who passed away in May. This record features the same quintet, an unusual mixture of old-timers and younger musicians. Higgins's emphatic presence is critical to the success of this record, ...

Culled from the same session that brought us the excellent Water Is Wide recording from last year, Hyperion With Higgins delivers more of the same commendable music. With a heavy heart, saxophone Charles Lloyd bids farewell to his friend, drummer Billy Higgins who passed away this year. Regardless, the chemistry is solid throughout, making Lloyd’s seventh ECM album particularly special. ...

Tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd pursues a slightly different angle on his new and seventh “ECM” release titled, The Water Is Wide. Lloyd continues to utilize the exemplary talents of drummer Billy Higgins and guitarist John Abercrombie, who both performed on the artist’s previous effort, Voice In The Night. While the saxophonist also enlists young wunderkind pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Larry Grenadier who comprise two thirds of the pianist’s working trio.
Perhaps Lloyd is plotting a new course in contrast ...

Not much could have gone wrong with this disc. Lloyd, one of jazz’s most distinctive tenor stylists, kept Billy Higgins and John Abercrombie on board from last year’s Voice In the Night, adding Brad Mehldau on piano and Larry Grenadier on bass. Abercrombie, however, only appears on four of the 12 tracks. Most of the session belongs to Mehldau, frankly. His duets with Lloyd on Ballade and Allegro" and The Monk and the Mermaid" feature some of his most sensitive ...
