Darius Jones, Thumbscrew, Oaagaada & Kira Kira

Read "Darius Jones, Thumbscrew, Oaagaada & Kira Kira" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

These two hours are filled with amazing music. Alto saxophonist Darius Jones continues his Man'ish Boy series with his new Legend of E-Boi (The Hypervigilant Eye). I'll be amazed if this doesn't show up on most best-of lists for 2024. It's Darius in his finest form. Thumbscrew's work is impeccable too, and their new Wingbeats continues the trio's run of brilliant releases--they're simply one of the finest trios. The Finnish Quartet, Oaagaada, finally solves the mystery of what this band's ...

Allen Lowe, Darius Jones, Louis Armstrong

Read "Allen Lowe, Darius Jones, Louis Armstrong" reviewed by David Brown

This week on The Jazz Continuum we start things off with the Marvels, a collaboration between saxophonist Charles Lloyd and singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams; then we keep the twang going with James Brown's take on some Hank Williams. Dinah Washington's It's A Mean Old Man's World follows before Rahsaan Roland Kirk takes up some Marvin Gaye at a rapid clip. Throughout the show we'll keep a blues mode going with pianists Mary Lou Williams, Jason Moran, Monty Alexander and some old ...

Michael McNeill: Barcode Poetry

Read "Barcode Poetry" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Pianist Michael McNeill has pursued a number of projects since his debut release, Passageways, in 2013, each of which has defined his distinctive niche as a musician informed by both avant-garde and conventional jazz. On Barcode Poetry, it is the former impulse that prevails, as McNeill and his esteemed colleagues--Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar, Dave Ballou on trumpet, and Shelly Purdy on vibes and percussion--engage in lengthy studies in texture and abstraction rather than straightforward melodic expression.

Roy Hargrove's Crisol: Grande-Terre

Read "Grande-Terre" reviewed by Chris May

Increasingly and with growing momentum, right up until he died at the young age of 55 in 2018, Roy Hargrove was a standard bearer for a new kind of African American jazz. The recipe embraced a variety of styles--jazz, Afro-Cuban music, funk, hip hop and soul--and it influenced a generation of musicians in jazz and beyond. But Hargrove never abandoned jazz, the foundation stone of his style. Instead he regarded other genres as part of a rainbow ...

Avishai Cohen: Brightlight

Read "Brightlight" reviewed by Neil Duggan

After gaining exposure in Chick Corea's trio in the late 1990s, Avishai Cohen has taken his dramatic acoustic bass sound mixed with Jewish folk music, jazz, world and classical influences and weaved them into a distinctive and accessible style. That style and his abilities as a showman and performer have given him global recognition and a wide network of influence, cementing his position as one of the top bass players of his generation. Israeli-born Cohen has used many ...

Righteous Rooster: Fowl Play

Read "Fowl Play" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

Time was when organ trios were thick on the ground. They were just bluesy enough, soul-inflected and grooving enough to capture a younger audience raised on something other than swing or even bop, although there were a few hard-bop outfits too. Many fondly remember Charles Earland who covered pop hits like “Aquarius" or “More Today than Yesterday," with the redoubtable Jimmy Ponder thumbing his way on guitar. Righteous Rooster does not look quite that far back, ...
