Brasuka: A Vida Com Paixão

Read "A Vida Com Paixão" reviewed by Katchie Cartwright

The big lockdown buried a lot of music that was ready to roll when Covid struck in 2020. Tours and gigs were canceled, album launches fizzled. Some of us are still discovering good sounds we missed out on. These include Brasuka's debut album, which arrived several years post lockdown in a large packet of CDs sent by the group's publicist, stamped with an October 8 street date. Who knew that meant October of 2021? Nevertheless... The name Brasuka ...

Caroline Davis: Portals, Volume 2 : Returning

Read "Portals, Volume 2 : Returning" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Alto saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis, a rising star in the jazz world, has unveiled her second installment of the “Portals" series, titled Portals Vol. 2: Returning. This album serves as a sonic memoir, inspired by her grandmother, Joan “Lady" Anson-Weber, and it represents a deeply personal journey of reflection and healing. As a gifted saxophonist and composer, Davis draws upon her grandmother's poetic legacy to craft a musical experience that is both moving and evocative. This album stands as ...

Vivian Buczek: Le Grand Michel

Read "Le Grand Michel" reviewed by Neil Duggan

The title of this album, Le Grand Michel, refers to French composer, pianist and arranger, Michel Legrand. In a glittering career, he wrote hundreds of film and television scores. He won three Oscars (from 13 nominations) with “The Windmills of Your Mind," featured in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), perhaps his best- known work. This song had English lyrics written by Marilyn Bergman and Alan Bergman, the couple formed a long-lasting songwriting relationship with Legrand, also winning three Oscars.

Carlos Bica: 11:11

Read "11:11" reviewed by Mark Corroto

For Carlos Bica, ugly was never an option for his quartet release 11:11. Much like American guitarist Bill Frisell does in his music, the Portuguese bassist and composer draws on his experience with his country's folk heritage. For Bica, that tradition is contained in the song genre fado. The music is often about fate or longing, in other words, the blues. Like the blues, this music is not just about sadness, but the beauty of the human condition.
