MARANATA: Ugly Euphoria
by Mark Corroto
There is the admonition 'run, don't walk' about Ugly Euphoria by the Norwegian noise duo Maranata. With more than a dozen releases to their name, the electronics of Jon Wesseltoft and Dag Stiberg's saxophones create a total onslaught of sound. The encouragement to run instead of walking is not to avoid this recording but to get a head start because the sound is ultimately gaining on you. Maranata, while primarily a duo, has invited guests to join their ...

by Troy Dostert
For a label that just got its start in 2018, it has quickly become evident that Giant Step Arts brings a potent, focused discipline to its documentation of some of the most distinctive jazz talents of our time. Rather than covering the field with as many different musicians as possible, the label's founder, Jimmy Katz, has chosen instead to cultivate close relationships with a relatively modest number--foremost of whom is trumpeter Jason Palmer, who has released three discs on the ...
Continue ReadingWhich Writer Or Broadcaster Has Most Influenced Your Appreciation of Jazz?
by Ian Patterson
2024 was a sad year for All About Jazz, with the sudden passing of both John Kelman and Chris May severely rocking the ship. Each of these unique writers had dedicated twenty years to All About Jazz, promoting the music with love and artful care. Between them, these two venerable jazz advocates contributed over 4,000 articles to AAJ's archive. Arguably no other writer anywhere did more to turn the spotlight on the fantastically diverse and fertile Norwegian jazz ...

This week is a two-part show. Part 1 takes a look at The RCA Victor Jazz Workshop series of LPs released between 1956 and 57. RCA promoted the releases stating: This exciting new series would be a transmission belt for new ideas in jazz orchestration, or sometimes for experiments in instrumentation." The artists were Manny Albam, Billy Byers, Al Cohn, Hal McKusick, George Russell and Hal Schaefer. Part 2 is a showcase of contemporary Asian and Asian American Jazz artists ...
Continue ReadingNoah Preminger: Ballads
by Jack Kenny
Noah Preminger is a philosophical, thought-through artist who can gauge the impact of his playing and his thinking on his intended audience. It is interesting to compare Preminger's Ballads to John Coltrane's Ballads (Impulse!, 1963), an illuminating set of familiar tunes that was reputedly instigated after his quartet's first tour of Europe, with Eric Dolphy in tow. Accusations of anti-jazz" flew. It was hoped that this step back into the Standards on his Ballads album would answer the"anti- jazz" accusations. ...
Continue ReadingHolly Cole: Kiss Me Quick
by John Chacona
Hands up everyone who thinks there should be more vibes solos on Elvis Presley covers. Though press materials don't credit the player, they identify Kevin Breit as the guitarist (was there any question?) on this Western Swing-flavored chart of the 1961 Doc Pomus / Mort Shuman song. Holly Cole sings it with just the right proportion of winking insinuation and hormonal rush. Corny? Sure, but music-making this slyly intelligent is enough to get a fellow all shook up.
