by Troy Hoffman
The past few years have seen a cornucopia of historic compositional works released into the world of public domain. 2025 (the year of the snake) continues the tradition, marking many significant jazz-oriented recordings slithering into public archives and becoming legally available for usage, interpretation, parody, and more. One of many entered this year is Rhapsody in Blue (Harms, Inc. 1924), by George Gershwin--an incredibly groundbreaking work for its time, based on its merging of jazz and classical. The composition was ...

by John Chacona
The Bad PlusBOP STOP at the Music SettlementCleveland, OHFebruary 7, 2025 Teachers of jazz--the good ones, at least--emphasize the importance of finding an individual sound. That goes for ensembles, too, and at their Friday appearance at Cleveland's Bop Stop, The Bad Plus demonstrated how, even with a radical overhauling of personnel and instrumentation, it can be done. For two decades, The Bad Plus brandished what might have been the most distinctive piano trio ...

by Dan McClenaghan
The news of a trombonist fronting a small jazz ensemble brings the name J.J. Johnson (1924-2001) to mind. He pioneered that form of jazz expression. Before he stepped onto the scene the big brass horn stayed mainly in the background, eclipsed by trumpets and saxophones. Many have followed in Johnson's footsteps: Curtis Fuller, Steve Turre, Michael Dease. The door opened, and a slew of talent stepped across the threshold. This brings us to Nanami Haruta, who ...

The material from this stimulating concert was soon afterward released as The Foreign In Us on the progressive label Relative Pitch. The album comprises five duos ...

Continue ReadingAlex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet: Situation
by Jerome Wilson
This is the third album by the Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet and, on it, they continue to refine their integration of jazz, country and classical styles into a more expansive and complex whole. Their use of vibraphone, pedal steel and harp, in addition to the more common instruments of guitar, saxophone and bass, gives the group a uniquely layered sound that can be delicate or driving. The instruments combine into sound collages that blend the ethereal with toughness. ...
