Ron Rieder: Dia Precioso!
by Jack Bowers
Dia Precioso! is the second album of exuberant Latin Jazz designed by Massachusetts-based composer Ron Rieder, gliding in on the heels of his well-received debut recording, Latin Jazz Sessions (2024). As before, Rieder leads a more-or-less octet comprised of topnotch Boston-area musicians; and as before, Rieder's music is for the most part arranged by percussionist Ricardo Monzon. While personnel remains roughly the same as on the earlier album, more brass (trumpeters Yaure Muniz or Greg Hopkins, trombonist ...

by James Taylor
Yorkston Jaycock Langendorf is the latest trio outing from Scottish folk songwriter James Yorkston. A unique pairing that blends elements of Nordic folk, American primitive guitar, swirling saxophones, moody ambience, and a fair amount of free improvisation, the trio engages in surprising levels of interplay, despite recording their parts remotely. Each composition began with Scottish songwriter James Yorkston improvising on the nyckelharpa. The keyed fiddle's origins date back to the 11th century, and its bowed performance and distinctive ...

Ireland May 23, 2025 Outlier comedian and agent provocateur Bill Hicks had a sketch where he greeted the audience with the news that this would be his last gig. Yeah, it was sad, he acknowledged, but he had enjoyed every minute of the ride--every lonely car journey between towns, every featureless airport waiting lounge, every cancelled flight, every mattress-stained motel room, and every dumb audience ...

by Dean Nardi
This interview is with Ma Clément, who is the vocalist half of the Fievel Is Glauque compositional duo, in partnership with Zach Phillips. The tandem typically eschews digital correspondence, opting to meet in either Brussels or New York when the muse is calling. Assuredly, they would appreciate the muse even more if it would purchase air fare. All About Jazz corresponded with Clément in French, so the text is a translation from both the interviewer and her. It is not ...

Like any other handiwork you can name, contemporary jazz did not emerge from a vacuum. It sprang forth from a variety of sources, including but not limited to bebop, cool jazz, swing, trad jazz (Dixieland), blues, stride and perhaps the granddaddy of them all, ragtime. Yes, ragtime. Before there was King Oliver or Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington or Woody Herman, Charlie Parker or Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson or John Coltrane, there was ragtime. And for those who surmise that ragtime ...
