Taj Mahal & Keb' Mo': Room On The Porch

Read "Room On The Porch" reviewed by Frank Housh

In 2017 blues legend Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo' recorded TajMo, (Concord Records), which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Eight years later, the two follow up with Room On The Porch, released May 23, 2025, also on Concord Records. Its ten tracks feel like a cool dive into a swimming hole, long forgotten by the crowds posing by the hotel pool. The album begins with the title song's shuffling welcome. Taj Mahal said, “That started ...

Read "Vlatko Stefanovski 50th Anniversary Concert in Skopje" reviewed by Nenad Georgievski

Vlatko Stefanovski Macedonian Philharmonic HallSkopje, Macedonia May 10, 2025 There are moments in a music lover's life when time stands still, when decades of sound, emotion, and history converge into a single, unforgettable evening. That's what happened on May 10 at the Macedonian Philharmonic Hall in Skopje, as Vlatko Stefanovski marked 50 years of music with a second, sold-out, three-hour concert that felt more like a celebration of shared memory than a mere performance.

George Colligan: Live At The Jazz Standard

Read "Live At The Jazz Standard" reviewed by Carl Medsker

During its relatively brief life, the Jazz Standard hosted many wonderful evenings of creative music. Artists performing in the basement beneath the barbecue restaurant ranged from Houston Person to Roy Haynes to Wadada Leo Smith. The Mingus Big Band held forth on most Monday evenings. Sadly, the club succumbed in 2021 to the economic pain caused by the pandemic. In memorium, we now have a robustly recorded live set from 2014 by the George Colligan trio. It is ...

Steve Ross at Birdland

Read "Steve Ross at Birdland" reviewed by Mark Edelman

Steve Ross Birdland New York, NY May 19, 2025 The food was great and the service fine, so you'd be forgiven for confusing Birdland with the cozy confines of the Oak Room at the Algonquin, circa 1981. Nevertheless, there we were (or weren't) as cabaret great Steve Ross took the Birdland stage and wowed another adoring audience, as he first did more than 45 years ago. Dressed smartly in a rich velvety dinner jacket--purportedly a ...

James Davis' Beveled: Arc and Edge

Read "Arc and Edge" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Beveled, according to Webster's, translates roughly to “slanted" or “grooved." On Arc and Edge, flugelhornist James Davis' Chicago-based sextet clearly has its own slant on contemporary post-bop jazz wherein the groove ranges from typically improvised passages to cutting-edge motifs and classical chamber music, using a second flugelhorn, two bass clarinets and rhythm to flesh out the leader's sonically unique and harmonically sophisticated compositions. The second flugelhorn is that of Chad McCullough. Geof Bradfield and Michael Salter man ...

Ryoko Ono: The Days

Read "The Days" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Saxophonist Ryoko Ono may not be well known in the United States, yet she has been active for almost two decades in her hometown of Nagoya, Japan. Both as an independent artist and with her genre-defying ensemble Ryorchestra, Ono has recorded several superb albums. The haunting The Days, on the New York based Relative Pitch label, is her first US release. Made up of nine solos, most named after days of the week, this set is entirely improvised. ...

Atzko Kohashi & Tony Overwater: Porgy

Read "Porgy" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

George Gershwin's 1935 folk opera, Porgy and Bess, a quintessentially American masterpiece, has had its share of jazz interpretations. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald visited the work in 1957 on Verve Records. Pianist Oscar Peterson dug into the Gershwin score--again, on Verve--in 1959. But the most notable rendition is the Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration Porgy and Bess (Columbia Records,1958), one of the finest big band jazz albums of all time. So what more is there to say about ...
