Quentin Bryan Angus: In Stride

Read "In Stride" reviewed by Friedrich Kunzmann

In Stride sees Australian guitarist/composer Quentin Angus following up his two critically acclaimed outings, Retrieval Structure (Self Produced, 2012) and Perception (Self Produced, 2014) in a stripped back trio-setting, featuring Ari Hoenig (dr) and Sam Anning (b). Not only does Angus cut back on the instrumentation when compared to his previous efforts, but the youthful urgency, which left a mark on the quintet outings, seems to have evolved into a more mature energy as well, making for a more laid-back ...

Quentin Angus: In Stride

Read "In Stride" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Australian jazz guitarist Quentin Angus has a more complicated back story than most. Based in New York City since 2010 (where he is Associate Professor of Music for the City University of New York), he appears here on a German record label. He leads an empathetic trio with bassist Sam Anning and busy drummer Ari Hoenig. The set list is an ambitious, eclectic blend of originals, jazz standards, and contemporary pop/rock covers. The opener is Wes Montgomery's “Jingles," ...

Quentin Angus: In Stride

Read "In Stride" reviewed by Geno Thackara

Quentin Angus comes across as the kind of player who's seemingly absorbed everything in developing a repertoire--one whose extensive study lets him draw on any style and throw out familiar licks on a whim. Here we have soft electric tones worthy of Grant Green crossed with the expansive compositional smarts of Pat Metheny. Fleet lines and chords (and sometimes devilish combinations of both) flow from strings with silky smoothness, often showing impressive smarts but always sounding as effortless as breathing. ...

Quentin Angus: Perception

Read "Perception" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Australia boasts an embarrassment of great jazz musicians, an increasing number of whom have made their way to jny:New York in recent years to broaden their horizons. Guitarist Quentin Angus is one such notable Aussie talent. Here Angus follows up his promising debut, Retrieval Structure (Self Produced, 2011) with another assured work that highlights his tasteful virtuosity and growing strengths as a composer. Angus effectively fronts two quartets, with drummer Kenneth Salters the anchor throughout. Stylistically, the music shares a ...

Quentin Angus: Perception

Read "Perception" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Quentin Angus, a multi-award-winning Australian guitarist, follows up his 2011 debut recording, Retrieval Structure, with the ambitious Perception. Born in 1987, he still clocks in as a “young" artist, but his music is strikingly mature. An apt comparison is the monumentally talented guitarist Pat Metheny, with a broad vision and a penchant for grand statements and complex, layered arrangements. Angus, of course, has not reached a Metheny-esque level of artistry, but the groundwork-the foundation-is there. Perception is not ...
