Album Description

This CD features my "chordless" quintet, recorded live at DC's fabled State Of The Union club. The quintet was an expansion of the trio that hosted Monday night jam sessions there at the time, with the horn line augmented by the wonderfully lyrical Rob Holmes on tenor sax and bass clarinet, and ex-Airmen of Note lead trombonist Rick Lillard. Aaron Clay holds down most of the bass duties, contributing a remarkable unaccompanied solo on "Plain Folk," while the great Leland Nakamura drives it all home. Bassist Steve Zerlin and drummer Francis Thompson sit in on the cool-inflected "Nana," and Zerlin also provides the edgy pulse of the title cut. The tunes on this date are expansive, with a mix of dense arranging and free blowing. "Paradiso" has shades of Mingus and "Michelle" is a Coltrane-inspired take on the Beatles classic. Originally released in 1996, You St. was the inaugural release of Union Records, dubbed "Washington's coolest little label" by the Washington Post.
