On While We Have Time, Vogler takes listeners on a journey that explores the subtle but profound beauties of everyday life. The album is an ambitious venture, featuring the talents of notable Chicago-based musicians Tito Carrillo (trumpet), Matt Gold (guitar), Jake Shapiro (piano), Samuel Peters (bass), and Neil Hemphill (drums). The nine original songs are brimming with adventurous rhythmic energy and melodic soulfulness, idiomatically anchored in modern jazz while freely exploring Vogler’s relationship with her Cuban roots. While We Have Time stands as a testament to Vogler’s gift for storytelling through sound, with each song shedding light on varying aspects of life and identity. The album’s eponymous track, “While We Have Time,” serves as a poignant reflection on life’s transience, while songs like “Ropa Vieja” and album opener “The Need to Be” delve into how family and culture shape our identities and how we move through the world. “The Need To Be” and “Ropa Vieja” are invigorating pieces that encapsulate the challenges and jubilations of exploring personal identity. Reflecting on her upbringing and the impact of her heritage, Vogler shares, “I wrote ‘Ropa Vieja’ for my maternal grandmother. She left Cuba with her family when she was sixteen, leaving everything behind when they moved to Chicago. Like many immigrant families, my grandma’s language was not passed down and as a result I did not grow up speaking Spanish. Over the last few years, I have been learning Spanish and practicing with my grandma. This song is about the things that are lost when families feel the need to assimilate, but is also a celebration of my grandma and of my family’s roots.” Renowned Chicago visual artist, Diana Cisneros, has conceptualized the album artwork that underscores the theme of generational womanhood. It beautifully captures the hands of Vogler’s immigrant grandmothers, adorned with rings that once belonged to their own mothers, making for the perfect visual representation of the album’s ethos. Throughout the album, Vogler’s evocative compositions embody her remarkable ability to weave stories into the fabric of music, brought to vivid life by her exceptional musicianship and the vibrant contributions of her ensemble. While We Have Time arrives on September 15 via Origin Records.
