Album Description

"What's new?" Is a beloved jazz standard written by bassist Bob Haggart in 1938, but it is also a question that must come to the notice of many jazz musicians as they explore classics that have already been interpreted over and over again. Richard Andersson, who has mostly released albums with his own compositions (including the trio NOR), has chosen a strong horn duo to help making the music flourish. The two Germans, bass clarinetist Rudi Mahall and alto saxophonist Henrik Walsdorff, have been playing side by side since the early '90s, where they met after the fall of the wall on Berlin's burgeoning free jazz scene. In groups such as "Aki and the Good Boys" and "Soko Steidle", they have fearlessly and unpretentiously pushed each other and played for decades. It was exactly the friendly and teasing interaction between the two that led Richard to put together the quartet back in 2012 with Danish drummer Kasper Tom. However, it took 7 years of touring until the quartet finally got the music documented on record. The four musicians were on fire when they met in The Village Recording in Vanløse one summer’s day after a week of concerts during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018. They recorded the record in a few hours with a bold and straight-to-the-bone approach. "What's new?" is an openminded and unrestrained play, and with that in mind it is worth considering that the original title of the song “What's new?” is “I’m free”. Because this is really what they are: free to play and be themselves - with each other and with the old tunes as guiding stars.
