Album Description

Brazilian instrumental group Tocaia Trio has released its self-titled debut album, Tocaia Trio. Featuring nine original tracks, the album captures a musical journey that began in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, in 2018 and gradually took shape through the collaboration of Pedro Saul (keyboards), Diego Fagundes (bass) and Pablo de la Rocha (drums).

Originally formed as a quartet, Tocaia found its current configuration during the isolation of 2020, when the remaining three musicians began developing the original repertoire that would eventually become their debut album. What started during a period of distance grew into a shared musical language shaped by the energy of rock and the freedom of jazz.

Drawing from post-bop, fusion and contemporary jazz, Tocaia Trio moves freely across genre boundaries. References such as Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Herbie Hancock coexist with influences from Radiohead, Nirvana and Vulfpeck, in music built around interaction and improvisation. In the years following the pandemic, the trio continued developing its original material through rehearsals and visceral live performances, allowing the compositions to evolve every time they were played.

That approach also shaped the recording of Tocaia Trio. Recorded over just three days at Tec Áudio Studio in Porto Alegre, with Arthur Weis as recording engineer, the album preserves the dynamics, spontaneity and sense of risk of three musicians playing together.

The trio’s sound emerges from the dialogue between Pedro Saul’s Rhodes and synthesizers, Diego Fagundes’ six-string bass — moving between clean tones and effects — and Pablo de la Rocha’s drums, which bring elements such as the bombo leguero and the physical energy of rock into the group’s jazz vocabulary.

All nine tracks are original compositions. The themes were written by Pedro Saul and found their final shape through the trio’s collective work, with energy, dynamics and space for improvisation developing through the interaction and individual musical voices of all three members. Edu Martins also collaborated on the arrangements, further expanding the possibilities of material that had been evolving for several years.

Tocaia Trio was produced by the trio and Edu Martins, who also mixed the album. Mastering was handled by Marcos Abreu (in memoriam).

After years of writing, rehearsing and performing these compositions, Tocaia Trio captures one moment in music that remains in constant transformation. The album documents a band whose identity was built by playing together, while preserving the freedom of each musician to respond to — and reshape — what the others bring into the music.

The album artwork features an original work by Brazilian artist Lenir de Miranda. Graphic design is by Pablo de la Rocha.
