Album Description

This CD, recorded at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsman's Guild in 2001, is a reunion of stellar Dizzy Gillespie sidemen and a tribute to his music. This big band features trumpeters Claudio Roditi and Terrell Stafford, and features Gillespie's former protégé Jon Faddis as conductor. The ensemble includes tenor saxmen Jimmy Heath and James Moody and trombonist Slide Hampton, with former young lions Renee Rosnes and alto saxophonist Antonio Hart. Fresh reads of Gillespie-associated compositions and standards are highlighted, from the Afro-tinged "A Night in Tunisia" to the Benny Golson ballad, "I Remember Clifford." "Jessica's Day" by Quincy Jones and the fiery labyrinthine, Gillespie-penned title track, along with Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight," also show that Dizzy Gillespie's music and legacy will live on in this century. —Eugene Holley Jr.
