Stream of Hope is the latest album by Bogdan Gumenyuk, a Montreal-based Canadian- Ukrainian composer and multi-instrumentalist, who brings traditional Ukrainian wind instruments into a contemporary jazz setting.
Drawing on Gumenyuk’s years of exploring the sopilka, trembita, tylynka, double sopilka, and rih, the album blends distinctive folk timbres with jazz improvisation, contemporary composition, spoken word, and a dynamic acoustic ensemble.
The album reflects Gumenyuk’s ongoing artistic journey to reconnect with his Ukrainian musical heritage and to expand its possibilities within contemporary music. Stream of Hope includes original works and new interpretations of Ukrainian folk songs.
Some of the compositions evoke an ancient, universal folk sensibility, with melodic contours and timbres that may recall traditional sounds associated with Indigenous North American and Nordic cultures. Rather than directly reproducing these traditions, the music arrives at a shared, elemental sonic language.
The album also features original spoken-word passages by Gumenyuk, adding a personal narrative dimension.
At its core, Stream of Hope is a musical journey that guides listeners through emotional and sonic landscapes. The result is a deeply personal, contemporary sound that bridges Ukrainian musical traditions and modern jazz.
