Album Description

Sport national is Hugo Blouin’s new album of jazz songs… on hockey! Dense and playful, this third album is created from various archives linked to the sport, its history and cultural meaning. From Maurice Richard to Marie-Philip Poulin, to the ’72 Canada-Russia Summit Series, the songs focus on key characters, events and themes that reveal hockey both as witness and participant to social changes – for better or worse. They also make the most out of the sport’s best vocabulary and quotes, with the help of humorist and radio host Olivier Niquet on the 1st single, “Ça sent la coupe”. Blouin is joined by all-star alumni of the Charbonneau ou les valeurs à’ bonne place albums, which received 4 nominations and 2 awards for Best Jazz Album (GAMIQ 2018) and Best Jazz Concert (OPUS 2019). These power skaters and fine puck handlers are singer Julie Hamelin, drummer Jean-Philippe Godbout (Gazoline), keyboardist Jonathan Turgeon, woodwinds expert Alex Dodier and tubist Julie Houle (René Lussier). Hall of famer Jean Derome also plays on two songs.
