Album Description
Sailor's Tales collects the four original King Crimson releases from 1970- 72. This includes the Steven Wilson/Robert Fripp new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes of studio albums In the Wake of Poseidon (1970), Lizard (1970), Islands (1971); and an expanded edition of the live Earthbound (1972), on CD, Blu Ray and DVD-Audio. It also includes, some on CD and DVD but all on Blu Ray, a total of eight live sets from 1971 and 15 shows from 1972 (four, never before released in any format and many more seeing release on CD and Blu Ray for the first time ever, having been previously only available as downloads), along with an expanded version of the previously released radio broadcast from Summit Studios in Denver (also 1972). It also includes rehearsal/audition tapes for the 1971/72 touring band, needledrops of the original UK vinyl releases, and a wealth of additional outtakes, alternate takes, rehearsal takes and other pieces that were not included on the 2009/10 40th Anniversary Series releases of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands. Add full-size gatefolds of Poseidon and Lizard; Islands is included in the 46-page booklet that includes liners by Crimson scribe Sid Smith, current Crimson guitarist/vocalist Jakko Jakszyk and David Singleton, along with images, poster reproductions, press clippings, tour dates and more. Also included in the 12"x12" box set are press sheets and promotional photos from the time, a Poseidon poster, full-size newspaper ads, a tour booklet, and a folder containing reproductions of gig lists, small posters, more black and white promotional shots, a performance contract reproduction, a backstage pass and... a ticket that holds, on the other side, a download key for King Crimson's September 4, 1971 performance at Hyde Park (low fidelity source, therefore not included on disc in the box). A treasure trove of a period in King Crimson history that is all-too- often overlooked by fans...but has been revived and made relevant once again (given they were never irrelevant) by the current Crimson that has been touring the world since the fall of 2014. Almost two days' worth of music, with the live shows and rehearsal/auditions sourced from (and cleaned up so sounding better than on prior releases) reel-to-reel and cassette soundboard recordings, this is the final word on the years when saxophonist/flautist Mel Collins, also a member of the current incarnation, was a key contributor to King Crimson's loosest, most improv-heavy and jazz-centric incarnations ever.
