Album Description

Mercy We Need is the sophomore release from Julian Davis Reid and his ensemble Circle of Trust. With Tramaine Parker (vocals), Lenard Simpson (alto sax), Ethan Philion (bass), and James Russell Sims (drums), Julian blends post-bop with neo-soul and gospel to cinematically explore the mercies we know we need and those we can’t name yet need nonetheless. The project features Tramaine’s vocals prominently (with background vocals from Eva Supreme and Demond Read) yet retains the heft of the instrumental performances from the ensemble’s first record, Vocation (2025). The popular composition “Moan” makes a return, sitting at the center of the journey as a neighbor to the title track, which Julian wrote with Tramaine in honor of her late mother, Mama Millie Parker. Faith, thanksgiving, lament, and acceptance ground the offering.
