Album Description
Inner Core brings together Irene Aranda (piano), Johannes Nästesjö (double bass), and Núria Andorrà (percussion) in a trio that treats sound as raw material—pressed, scraped, and detonated into form. Recorded in Barcelona in December 2016, the album draws on the language of geothermal physics, and the music follows suit: volatile, pressurized, and constantly shifting beneath the surface.
From the opening “Planck Mass,” the trio operates at full intensity, unleashing dense, almost violent clusters before abruptly collapsing into microscopic detail—bowed strings, inside-piano resonances, metallic friction. The boundaries between instruments dissolve as Aranda digs into the piano as a “huge sound generator,” Nästesjö’s bass rumbles and splinters through extended techniques, and Andorrà surrounds them with an arsenal of objects that blur percussion into texture.
What makes Inner Core compelling is its sense of unstable equilibrium. Sounds collide, repel, and coalesce like particles in motion, yet the trio maintains a precise, almost intuitive balance—shifting from explosive collective force to tense, near-silent passages without losing cohesion. Even at its most abrasive, the music feels deliberate, shaped by deep listening and a shared understanding of space and density.
Rather than following jazz lineage, the album exists in a borderless zone between free improvisation and electroacoustic thinking. It’s a visceral, highly physical listen—music that doesn’t unfold so much as erupt and settle in cycles, revealing a trio attuned to both the violence and the subtlety of sound.
