Album Description
Out January 5, 2027 on Boom Crash Records, the 4th album from the “Zweifel/Lewis/Wiens Trio” covers some of their usual territory: originals, hard bop classics (ie. “Pyramid” and “Boo Boo’s Birthday”), soul (“1974 Blues”), songbook standards (“Give Me the Simple Life”), some lesser know covers (ie. “Favors”, “Syndrome”), and even branching into some free playing as on Paul Motian’s “Arabesque”… but all done with the elegance, dynamics, groove, and maturity heard across all their records, and live performances.
A little about the trio: beginning as a pandemic project back in 2020… Spencer Zweifel, Seth Lewis and Bobby Wiens developed a chemistry through frequent outdoor jam sessions. Their shared love of hard bop, the American songbook, and classic soul music manifested in the creation of an eclectic and exciting repertoire. From hard-swinging blues and bebop to lyrical ballads and grooving soul, the Zweifel/Lewis/Wiens Trio delivers a compelling and joyful musical experience. After working together regularly for several years, and with 3 studio records under their name, the trio brought their book into the studio again last summer, which eventually became Foray.
All three musicians bring their A-game here, making this a nuanced, varied and very rewarding record to listen to
