Personnel
Album Description
Artie Shaw was a virtuoso clarinetist; always thoughtful and tasteful, while also always pushing the boundaries of the music, and never satisfied. He constantly changed the personnel in his band- adding and taking away strings, enlarging the brass section, even adding harpsichord- always searching for a new a different sound. His final big band recordings in 1949 are still among the most progressive in the style. His final small group recordings in 1954 with Hank Jones on piano are some of his best- and some of the finest jazz clarinet ever recorded to this day.
He simply wanted to be the best musician with the best band- that was his only goal. Fame and fortune were not his main pursuits, and yet that’s exactly what happened to him in a big way. And the pressures of being a superstar ultimately caused him to quit playing at a relatively young age. He married movie stars (unhappily) and was a matinee idol (unhappily). He served in WWII in the Pacific Theatre and nearly lost several bandmates to malaria and other illnesses. He was blacklisted by the FBI for speaking out against war and fled to Spain for a few years. Nevertheless, his compositions, arrangements, and choices of songs remain among the greatest in the history of swing and jazz music.
In paying tribute to Artie Shaw, we didn’t want to- and knew we couldn’t- replicate his music. We did take cues from his arrangements when we thought it proper. And we did add some of our own interpretations as well. All the solos played here are completely new improvised by each musician and are not in any way transcribed from the originals. While Paul Cosentino’s Boilermaker Jazz Band consists of 5 instrumentalists plus vocal, we not only played songs from the Shaw Gramercy Five small groups, but also pared down some of his big band classics. Featured vocals are all songs recorded originally by the Artie Shaw Orchestra with Helen Forest, sung here by the fabulous Erin Keckan.
It was a challenge and an honor to record this music. We hope you will enjoy it
