Album Description

“Edoardo Liberati is a fantastic guitar player that I met in Siena in 2021. He has put together some incredible talent and great compositions for his debut record.” Seamus Blake “Guitarist and composer Edoardo Liberati takes the listener on an extraordinary journey on “Everyday Life”. Moments of intimate conversation give way to stunning harmonic landscapes, exotic melodic incantations and swinging rhythmic adventures. His travel companions’ musical voices bring joy, color and camaraderie to the generous journey offered to us by Liberati. This an adventure the listener can gladly relive with each listening.” Greg Burk GleAM Records is proud to announce the release of Everyday Life, the debut album of Italian guitarist and composer Edoardo Liberati and his project Synthetics, available on CD and digital download / streaming from April 22nd, 2022. What is striking about this album is the blend between the songs and the storytelling that comes out of them with personality and courage. The songs present different feels and ideas, regarding all the aspects of music: tempo, meter, texture, arrangement, form, orchestration, dynamics. Each track has its specific and unique voice, without sacrificing the coherence of the entire work. The author tells us about it: “I dealt with some big life changes, moving from The Netherlands (the country where I lived 5 years of my life) back to my own country, Italy. From that moment on, I started composing lots of new songs, and I started picturing the record. Having a precise goal as such worked very well. Indeed, I raised the composing rhythm and I delivered completely 'fresh' ideas. For the first time I dealt with every single aspects of music, from composing to arranging, from producing to partially mix it, and so forth. I totally loved it, and I felt very comfortable with it, even though the goal was pretty ambitious. I consider these 'new songs' much more 'personal', and much more 'straight to the point' than all my previous compositions. I believe I just needed to mature more on the writing aspects. “Elegy”, “Everyday Life”, “Calypsin'”, “Monginevra” and “Lithium” came quickly, one after the other. “Everyday Life” tries to tell a story. I'm the messenger of it, but each one of us will have a different feeling and there will be a different sensation to tell once the last note of it is played”. The album opens with Everyday Life, a song with a double role. A first version is performed in solo by the leader with the acoustic guitar, open to improvisation but with a clear harmony and melody. An interesting game of dynamics, between rarefaction and articulation, which alternates moments of silence with moments of great density. This version was recorded in the 'classic hall' of the studio, a room with a very open and airy sound, colored by a long natural reverb. The other version, on the other hand, is a Pop-style ballad featuring the Fender Rhodes. The Author: “Everyday Life (Outro) is a humble homage to a band I deeply admire, the Kneebody. I love their concept of music, their Rock and Pop attitude, with a common thread of Jazz mindset”. Lithium wanted to be a swinging 3⁄4 song, inspired by a Mark Turner composition. A rhythmic plot full of kicks' and accents gives a certain structural complexity to the composition while preserving the catchiness and lyricism of the melodic lines. Monginevra is the first of the three sung songs on this album. The author tells us the story behind the genesis of this piece: “Monginevra was born during a hot day in Siena. Tired from classes, exhausted by the heat, I went back home and started noodling on my guitar. I found the first two chord voicings of the song; the rest followed naturally. I took a piece of paper and started writing down the melody, trying to use some composing techniques. For instance, once I found the bass line for the A section, I used the same bass intervals to construct the B section. Giulia Cianca sang it masterfully, despite the complexity of the theme and the high pitches. Elegy, which means 'poem', draws inspiration from the free Jazz world, although it has a very specific chord progression. This song as well as Everyday Life is performed twice in the record. The first one is played by the leader on acoustic guitar and Giulia Cianca on vocals and it was recorded in the studio classic hall. The second one is played by Vittorio Solimene on Piano, Alessandro Bintzios on Double Bass and Riccardo Galli on drums, together with the leader on electric guitar. A gentle hymn, with lots of spaces and a conducted/rubato feel. Functional chord changes alternate with modal sections and chords with particular resolutions. The melody guides the flow, overall relaxed and peaceful. When the Movie's Over is a piece with a cinematic dimension in which each section represents an expressive world in its own right. The Author: “The tune was composed in 2020, right when the pandemic exploded, and it drew inspiration from the band Radiohead, more specifically from their song Exit Music (For a Film). Brad Mehldau's version caught my attention. Another humble homage, where the form complexity was my first goal. I imagined it as 'cinematic', dark at times, bright at other times; warm and slow in some spots, edgy and pressing in other spots. Every part could be a song on its own, which brings me back to a hold composing habit. We are at the sixth track of this album, Choro Cantato. Listening to it, the first thing we notice is a deep search for traditional Brazilian music, the Choro. A great coherence with the way of writing and playing this music expressed through a complex melody, on a fast tempo and with a pressing rhythm. Harmonically, the author alternates modal contexts and functional harmony. The Author: “Choro Cantato was composed in 2019 for a nonet I was taking care of back in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The title was intended as a homage to a female composer I deeply love, Maria Schneider. Her song, which I had the luck to play in her orchestra, is called Choro Dançado. My version features Nico Gori on clarinet, a musician I had the pleasure to have as my teacher, who instantly blew me away. I consider this song extremely fit for Nico's way of playing. Intermezzo was meant as a short intro to the following song, Preghiera in Settembre. Both are recorded in the Classic Hall of the recording studio, just as Everyday Life. Intermezzo features Giacomo Serino on trumpet and Giulia Cianca on vocals. The Author: “I pictured this specific line- up in my mind: no drums or harmonic instruments, just two melodic instruments weaving themselves throughout the execution. To write this short piece, I used the ‘contrary counterpoint’ writing technique: as the upper melody ascends, the bottom one descends, and vice versa. This intertwining creates at the same time an interesting melodic movement and harmonic stability thanks to the exclusive use of chordal notes (harmonic counterpoint). Preghiera in Settembre is introduced by a long note held by Giacomo Serino and Giulia Cianca, followed by my acoustic guitar part, an arpeggio on the tonic minor chord. The feel is pretty similar to the Intermezzo, lyrical, almost sacral. The Author: “I had a summer day pictured in my mind, extremely hot with its suffocating air; I thought about its ‘negative’ aspect more than the joyful side. Preghiera means ‘prayer’, as the melody seemed to me to almost recall an oration”. A tune with an open harmony without great complexity that leaves room for the lyricism and expressiveness of the musicians. Calypsin' is a joyful song, with an extremely functional harmony and very well-known chord progressions. The strength of this composition is the simplicity and cantability of the theme, skilfully interpreted on the clarinet by Nico Gori, who has the opportunity to highlight his great interpretative and solo skills. A perfect epilogue to a story well told by its actors and which highlights the skilful direction of its Leader.
