Album Description

Breakwater appeared on the Polish jazz scene in March of 1979 winning the national "Jazz Nad Odra" Festival (for the best band and the best soloist - Krzysztof Medyna). Apart from their main activity as a group, the musicians earned their living as an accompanying band (enlarged by two additional players) for Jerzy Polomski, a popular vocalist of the time. This resulted in ostracism on the most radical part of jazz community. The band did their job, however, undeterred by unfair criticism. Breakwater managed to arrange three radio sessions. Their first recordings, made in Opole in 1979, are delicate and dream-like. The material from Lublin, recorded the following year, is Breakwater fully-fledged, replete with instrumental madness, extensive melodies and moods. The band's recording history closes with two surprising pieces from November 1980, including the piano and saxophone duo by Andrzej Winnicki and Krzysztof Medyna, "Duet i juz". Breakwater disbanded in 1982, although it reactivated in the US - with a new line-up - in the 1990s (see the Electric Breakwater album "In the Bush").
