Ad Astra is the debut album as a bandleader by Italian saxophonist and composer Angelo Domenico Alfieri. Conceived as a musical journey towards an unreachable ideal, the album explores the tension between human aspiration, restlessness and the search for a place that may exist only beyond the limits of reality.
Featuring six compositions performed by an eleven-piece ensemble, the record brings together jazz, rock, psychedelic influences, pop sensibilities and orchestral writing. Its musical language draws on the exploratory spirit of artists such as Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, alongside the evocative cinematic sound worlds of Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni and Piero Umiliani.
Rather than following a conventional jazz format, Ad Astra unfolds as a sequence of interconnected musical landscapes. Extended arrangements, shifting textures, instrumental dialogues and improvisation contribute to a narrative in which each composition represents a different stage of an inner journey. The presence of horns, strings and rhythm section allows Alfieri to move between intimate passages, powerful ensemble writing and expansive cinematic sonorities.
The album's title evokes the idea of reaching for the stars: an enduring pursuit of something distant, perhaps unattainable, yet essential to the human experience. Ad Astra is ultimately a reflection on desire, imagination and the impulse to move beyond familiar horizons.
