Deja Bleu

Who is Deja Bleu? Deja Bleu got together in about June of 2005. Several of us found that we had a common interest… a desire to play and perform music. There are five of us. Diane fronts us by handling the vocal end of things. Nancy fills in with flute and percussion. Steve adds a guitar and Dave lays down a solid foundation with his bass. Anne, our unofficial (but also undisputed) leader, handles the keyboard duties. While we all share a common love of performing with Deja Bleu, we all come from different musical backgrounds. Some come from classical and church backgrounds, others from 60’s and 70’s rock bands

Exploding Star Orchestra

Exploding Star Orchestra: In 2005, cornetist Rob Mazurek was approached by The Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute to put together a group that would represent the more contemporary / avant-garde side of sound in Chicago for a concert in Millennium Park’s Frank Gehry-designed concert hall. The music was conceptualized/composed in Manaus Brazil, Fontevraud, France and Chicago, and developed over more than a dozen performances of the Orchestra before it was recorded by John McEntire at his Soma Studio in Chicago. We Are All From Somewhere Else is comprised of 3 distinct sections, and corresponds to a story involving an exploding star, cosmic transformation, a sting ray, the travels of the sting ray, intelligent conversations with electric eels, the destructive power of humans, the death and ascension of sting ray, the transformation of sting ray ghost to flying bird, and the transformation of bird to phoenix to rocket to flying burning matter to a new-born star. Says Mazurek, “I could clearly see and hear the events as a kind of animated adult/children’s story that could be presented in book or video form

Everything's A Little Glorious

Photos by Susan Wilson, www.susanwilsonphoto.com Drawing heavily from avant-pop and contemporary classical music, the Boston-based instrumental quartet declares their music "chamber rock for the new millennium." Focusing solely on original compositions, Everything's A Little Glorious (EALG) "strives to push boundaries of beauty and emotion", alternately using spare and simple textures or loud, dense noise. Some of EALG's music incorporates group improvisation, but tightly in service of their compositions; most songs last about three minutes. Since its members came together in 2005 as graduate students at the New England Conservatory, EALG has worked hardest to produce a cohesive sound

Boogaloo Swamis

Active since:

Boogaloo Swamis: live at Passim Coffeehouse / from the Boston Phoenix

Now that the temperate solo troubadours dominate the coffeehouse market, it's easy to forget the days when folk basements often showcased a more rambunctious pack of performers. The old Club 47 offered a grab bag of quasi-folk noisemakers from the Charles River Valley Boys to visiting blues brawlers like Muddy Waters and Junior Wells. But thanks to a well hyped acoustic-music renaissance, local concert moguls have been steadily luring away both high-priced ensembles and seasoned folkie stars, leaving the coffeehouses with a dwindling pool of quality singer-songwriters

The Penguin Jazz Quartet

The Penguin Jazz Quartet started as a trio in the fall of 1994. Guitarist Pat Smith and drummer Russ St. John had been playing in a blues band together when bassist Sumit Das moved to the San Francisco bay area from Chicago. Pat and Sumit had played together in several Chicago bands in the early 1980's. All three wanted to explore the jazz repertoire. They were soon joined by pianist Bill Walker, another Illinois native. The Quartet finds inspiration in the work of jazz greats like the Gene Harris quartet and the Bill Evans trio, and has been creating their own interpretations of jazz standards. In 1996 they recorded a self-titled compact disc featuring such songs as My Funny Valentine, God Bless the Child, and Pat's own Penguin Jazz
