Raw Jazz Man

he puts the horn
to his lips
flavors the reed
with panama spice
takes a slow,
deep drag
of mystery—
ex-ha-lation!
as the universe
centers itself
in every note
he blows poems
into my heart
when he plays
with that saxophone
i pay homage
in rhyme and verse
