Bobby Broom: Stand!
Discovering new territory on familiar paths is a jazz musician's quest. Bobby Broom pursues that goal with the utmost skill and verve on his latest recording Stand!. The ten selections on this outing, which have inspired the acclaimed guitarist, are popular tunes from the 60's and 70's.These songs, which include a repertoire from a variety of pop artists such as Sly and the Family Stone, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Simon and Garfunkle, are given unique interpretations that are fully realized in the capable hands of Bobby Broom's talented trio.

Who is Bobby Broom you might ask? A true jazz guitarist who has been on the scene for more than 20 years. His diverse career has traveled the road from being a popular 70's Jazz /Fusion/ R&B artist, to straight ahead venues with luminaries such as Sonny Rollins, Kenny Burrell, and Miles Davis. The culmination of his music and experiences are now fully realized in one of today's most accomplished jazz guitarist. His chops are as tight as anyone on the current scene and his skill and talent are showcased in full bloom on this recording.

A variety of textures and palettes are displayed on a vivid canvas on this outing. Listening to the tune "I Can See Clearly Now", you will be transported to a place that is at once, soulful and melodic, and yet warmly familiar, if you're old enough to recognize the timeless 70's pop tune. The songs were carefully picked by Broom, and were not chosen for any conceptual significance, but purely for his love for the music, that was, and is, still vibrant today. All the tunes showcase the cohesiveness of a jazz trio who clearly are vibing off one another. Broom's creative playing is enhanced by drummer Dana Hall, whose polyrhythmic changes allow freedom for all the musicians to express themselves. Bassist Dennis Carrol holds the trio together with a deep full sound, with impeccable timing. Brooms solos are complex, fluid, and artful; shifting according to the mood and setting of each piece. Listen at the end of "The Letter," as the trio smoothly changes from a swing to blues tempo, with utter ease. These guys groove and evoke deep reflection, with an array of musical colors. All of these paths lead to an immensely enjoyable listening experience. Highly Recommended. A pick for 2001.
