Majamisty Trio: Organic
ByAlvanović's tense and cinematic "Jungle" is the centerpiece of the album and it opens with drummer Lav Kovac's rumbling kit and bassist Ervin Malina's fluid con-arco phrases. The interplay is tinged with Eastern European lyricism. Alvanović's haunting, sparse chords resonate against the darkly hued ambience and shimmer within it. Alvanović embellishes the circular and serpentine theme with mysticism and passion. The hypnotic three-way exchanges deftly utilize silent pauses ushering a serene and melancholic conclusion.
Malina's own "Longing" opens with crescendo piano notes which are like a tiptoeing dancer. As the ensemble adds undulating collective vamps a wistful yearning permeates the tune. Poetic and soulful, Alvanović's elegant lines meander around Malina's reverberating thumps and Kovač's echoing thuds. Smoothly the group performance coalesces around Malina's agile improvisation.
Fellow pianist Kosta Jevtić contributes the warm and captivating "Absence." Alvanović's wistful cascades of keys bounce off her sidemen's rhythmic flourishes. The subtle fervor of the main theme simmers with a mix of nostalgia and languid ardour. In contrast the leader's "They couldn't stop travelling" is brightly hued and celebratory. Kovač deftly navigates the intricate cadence that Malina's earthy lines anchor. Alanovič weaves a charming tale of unbridled joy with graceful spontaneity. Malina brings in a delightful angularity with his solo which closes the track on a dramatic note.
Organic bristles with quiet energy and sophistication. The brilliance of the individual musicians, as well as the exquisite synergy within the group, enhance the emotive and cerebral impact of the crystalline and textured compositions. This is the kind of recording that leads to new discoveries with each "spin" hence it is a superlative work of art. Furthermore, it is intelligently uplifting and a much-needed salve for dark days.
