This summer twenty of the brightest stars in rejuvenated, world class British Jazz take over the York Theatre Royal for two days of thrilling music on July 29 and 30 for a brand new York event! York Dune Jazz Festival.

York@Large have joined forces with J-Night, the Theatre Royal and Dune Records to bring an exciting line up of award-winning stars such as Soweto Kinch, Denys Baptiste, Zara Macfarlane, Abram Wilson, Alex Wilson and Jazz Jamaica to the city.

York Dune Jazz Festival opens on Friday 30 July 7.30pm with a tribute to Billie Holiday starring Zara McFarlane with a stellar band, including Soweto Kinch and Denys Baptiste, presenting a heart stopping tribute to the Lady Day. This celebration of Holiday's contribution to music and her position as the quintessential jazz singer and interpreter of great love songs will delight listeners.

Soweto Kinch is an exceptionally gifted musician playing jazz, hip hop and rap and is the hottest saxophonist of the new jazz scene with a glittering array of awards to his name. These include Mercury Music Prize for Album of the Year 2003, MOBO award for Best Jazz Act 2003, Urban Music Award 2004 for Best Jazz Act plus the BBC Jazz Award for Best Band and Best Instrumentalist 2004. He appears with his band featuring Abram Wilson, Troy Miller, Michael Olatuja and Femi Temowo on Saturday 30 July at 5.30pm.

The headline concert will be on Saturday 31 July when Jazz meets Motown. Motown Reloaded is the brand new project from the award winning and forever-popular Jazz Jamaica. The 12-piece combo hits the spot with a world-class line up embracing the legacy of the Motown label and its enormous contribution to the world of great music

Dune Records is the award-winning company specialising in British jazz artists emerging from the seminal Jazz Warriors – which spawned Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Orphy Robinson and Gary Crosby.

“Britain now has its own rival to the Buena Vista Social Club. See them now before the rest of the world grabs them." The Guardian

The event’s promoter, David Porter said, “We are delighted that the York Dune Jazz Festival has some of the most exciting jazz artists on its roster, covering a colourful spectrum to suit most tastes. From modern acoustic jazz, to jazz with a touch of hip-hop, soul-jazz, jazzy R ‘n’ B, jazz blended with ska, reggae and other Caribbean flavours, and even jazz with Tamla Motown. Whatever the flavour, Jazz is at the heart of all that we do!"

It is hoped that the Festival will become a regular feature of summer in York and organisers are seeking to involve local people through workshops, education projects and foyer concerts.

York Dune Jazz Festival is supported by Arts Council England, York at Large and the Alf Peacock Memorial fund.

Performance Tickets for York Dune Jazz Festival range from £12.00-£18.00 with festival passes also available from £30-£40. Tickets can be purchased in person at York Theatre Royal Box Office or by calling 01904 623568.
