WRTI to Host Steinway Peace Piano
On Monday, October 11th, WRTI will begin a celebration of the Steinway Peace Piano. The celebration starts with a full day of student performances at the WRTI Performance Studio located on Temple University's main campus in Philadelphia.
Featured will be students from Temple's Ester Boyer College of Music as well as students from around the Philadelphia region. This all day celebration will underscore one of the central purposes of the Peace Piano; students raising money to help other children around the world via UNICEF.
The second day, Tuesday, October 12th, will bring professional performers from the Greater Philadelphia Region and New York City to WRTI. It will also include three showcases by the Curtis Institute of Music, Astral Artistic Services, and the Ester Boyer College of Music. Scheduled to perform are Robert Taub, Leon Bates, Susan Starr, Bill Cunliffe, Julianne Baird, Stanley Cowell, Tom Lawton, Jie Chen, Christopher Falzone, Di Wu, Koji Attwood, Simone Dinnerstein, Ayano Ninomiya, and Mark Kosower.
On Thursday, October 14th, Lifeline Music and WRTI will present an all-day Peace Piano Jazz Jam. Reminiscent of days gone by the WRTI Performance Studio will host a full blown Philly-style jam session featuring many of the regions finest jazz musicians. Artists scheduled to perform include Eric Mintel, Alfie Pollitt, Dave Burrell, Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble, Rob Henderson, Jeff Gordon, Zanaib McCoy, Tom Lawton, Leon Mitchell and Ella Gahnt, and Free Expressions.
WRTI will produce several broadcast specials as a result of this week's performances and will also release its first Live from WRTI CD celebrating the generous creative contributions of the Peace Piano artists.
Sponsored by Jacobs Music, The Kimmel Center, and WRTI, the Steinway Peace Piano will be in the Philadelphia area for the entire month of October. Steinway & Sons created the specially designed concert grand piano to increase public awareness of UNICEF and to raise money for children in need through the joy of music.
WRTI's primary mission is to broadcast classical and jazz music that entertains listeners and enriches the cultural life and literacy of the Greater Philadelphia Region. For more information on attending these events contact Porsche Blakey at (215) 204-7025.
