Steve Turre Sextet featuring Buster Williams & Lenny White and special guest Nicholas Payton
Steve Turre – trombone & shells Nicholas Payton – trumpet Ron Blake – tenor saxophone Isaiah J. Thompson – piano Buster Williams – bass Lenny White – drums

“The jazz world needs more Steve Turres. A powerful technician with a soulful tone and quick wit, Turre is perhaps the leading trombonist of this generation.”—Rolling Stone

Steve Turre, a celebrated and acclaimed performer on trombone and seashells, leads an incredible sextet featuring legends Buster Williams on bass and Lenny White on drums with special guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton, fellow SNL band mate saxophonist Ron Blake and the heralded young pianist Isaiah J. Thompson. Turre’s storied career includes work alongside music legends such as Ray Charles, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Woody Shaw. He has won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for “Best Trombone” and for “Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells).” A versatile master and true jazz original, he’s equally at home on everything from swinging classic bop lines or conjuring Rahsaan over a deep groove. Downbeat says, “Few artists ‘own’ their instrument to the degree that trombonist Steve Turre does. Whether playing the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, performing as a member of the Saturday Night Live house band, or with one of his own units, his voice is distinctive and memorable."

Joe Farnsworth Trio featuring Brad Mehldau and Larry Grenadier
Brad Mehldau – piano
Larry Grenadier – bass
Joe Farnsworth – drums

“One of the premiere straight-ahead drummers of his generation.” —Glide Magazine

Drummer Joe Farnsworth leads an exceptional trio featuring two of his fellow modern masters: pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Larry Grenadier. The New York Times says, “Joe Farnsworth is a briskly swinging drummer, especially persuasive with the dialect of hard bop.” Broadway Worldadds that he “is known for his blazing speed, precision, and melodic playing.” Earlier this year, Farnworth released a highly regarded new album, In What Direction Are You Headed? furthering his growing reputation as an inspired bandleader. His abilities as a leader are clear reflections of some of the lessons that he learned during his time in some of the most notable bands of the last 30 years. Groups led by George Coleman, Benny Golson, Pharaoh Sanders, Cedar Walton, Harold Mabern, and McCoy Tyner, among others. This trio features Mehldau, who called him “arguably the greatest working jazz pianist” by The New Yorker, and his frequent collaborator Grenadier who they also said is “a leading light” of his generation.

Eric Reed Quartet
Eric Reed – piano
Dan Wilson – guitar
Billy Drummond – drums

“Eric Reed has fully established himself in the forefront of jazz pianists.” —All About Jazz

Eric Reed leads a captivating quartet with guitarist Dan Wilson and drummer Billy Drummond. On the heels of his release earlier this year of a new album Black, Brown, and Blue, celebrating music by composers of color, Reed called it a milestone calling it “the culmination of my life thus far. I’m freer than I’ve ever been in my personal life, and I’m freer than I’ve ever been in my music. I’m accepting who I am. I love who I am. And as I continue to evolve – my artistry, my sexuality, and my overall humanity – my music will continue to become more and more personal.” A widely respected and popular musician and mentor, Reed first rose to fame with Wynton Marsalis and has performed with artists as varied as Jessye Norman, Quincy Jones, and Patti Labelle. His perpetually swinging and sophisticated style has made him one of the important ambassadors of the music.

The incredible (and beloved) tenor saxophonist Houston Person, whose robust and soulful sound have been delighting audiences for over 60 years, joins the great Emmet Cohen (on Hammond B-3!) to set the night on fire. Cohen, who was called “a young piano virtuoso with a delicate touch, assured, swaggering swing feel, and debonair flow” by The New York Times turns back the clock to the pre-pandemic years when he was one of the house B-3 organists at SMOKE Jazz Club, holding down a weekly residency.

Johnathan Blake—a drummer whose dynamic playing, artistic vision, and innate versatility led NPR’s John Murph to call him “the ultimate modernist”—celebrates the release of his exciting new Blue Note album with the group who recorded it: saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist David Virelles, and bassist Dezron Douglas. Saxophonist Dayna Stephens makes a special appearance in place of Wilkins on Saturday night. The New York Times says, “Blake’s drumming is as bold as thunder and as subtle as the patter of rain.” The Guardian adds, “his command of time is quite unbelievable – tricky and playful but accurate to the millisecond.”

Al Foster – drums

“His technique is amazing, using a seamless combination of single-line and chordal playing, and his harmonic ingenuity is endless.” —The Guardian

Guitarist Peter Bernstein leads an inspired quartet with pianist Adam Birnbaum, bassist Doug Weiss and featuring legendary drummer Al Foster. Bernstein “stands head and shoulders above the crowd,” reports All About Jazz, with The Times (UK) adding, “Bernstein is a master of straight-ahead swing with submerged complexities, which is a way of saying that, while his music is advanced, the listener never feels shut out.” Stereophile calls his featured guest Al Foster “one of the great living drummers in jazz.” Bernstein featured Foster in a quartet to great acclaim last fall, and these special performances should not be missed.
