The Lighthouse All-Stars was the house band at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, Calif., that was formed in the early 1950s by bassist Howard Rumsey, who managed the club. Many top musicians who relocated to Los Angeles in the early 1950s played in the band while working off their card"—an expression that meant waiting the required six months before qualifying for membership in the local musicians union. The Lighthouse All-Stars made many recordings and were responsible for solidifying what would become known as the West Coast jazz sound.
