New York, NY - The fourth annual URB ALT Festival presents the hippest of multi-cultural music/film/visual art at New York City's Public Assembly, Harlem School of the Arts and BAMcafe. The Village Voice says that The URB ALT Festival features artists that are exemplars of boundary crossing, synthesis and unification." The eve of summer finds URB ALT Festival 2009 signifying that declaration again for 4 exciting days by presenting the talents of artists from around the globe in homage to Star Trek, the classic science fiction television/movie series.
The June 20th opening day at Public Assembly features the futuristic downtempo grooves of singer/songwriter, Amanda Ray; the soulful alternative funk/folk of Atlantan, Shanti Om; the cosmic jazz vocal stylings of Los Angelino, Waberi Jordan(Billy Higgins); the rock based electronic folk mashup of Stoni Taylor(Indigo Girls); the otherworldly harp melodies of Brandee Younger(Ravi Coltrane); and the futuristic big band exploratory missions of the MuthaWit Orchestra(URB ALT Festival house group, PFunk, Curtis Mayfield). Artists will be performing their original material as well as music associated with the world of Star Trek. The audience is encouraged to dress representing their favorite characters from the series.
URB ALT founder Boston Fielder, says Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek featuring Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and the Enterprise crew teaches us that perceived alien cultures, much like underground or avant garde art, is a simple reflection of the best and worst of human nature. Star Trek is a great pop form distillation of the cross-cultural transformative energy manifested during Barack Obama's presidential campaign."
June 24th at Harlem school of the Arts is an art exhibition and workshop featuring exciting artists from various forms of media including live art painter Marthalicia Maraccita; experimental graphic designer YAMS; media blending photographer Jaclyn Roberts; provocative underground comic artist Everett Zatt"Glenn; light bending photographer Ed Marshall; and 3d/2d animator/conceptual designer Tim Fielder. The date will also feature musical performances by Nigerian folk/soul chanteuse Kaneng Lolang and an acoustic based line-up of the MuthaWit Orchestra.
June 26th and 27th finds URB ALT Festival 2009 crossing the river into Brooklyn again with presentations at the popular BAMcafe. These two special nights close out the BAMcafe Live season by featuring the electronic rock dadaist cabaret of AuntKeKe; the polyphonic African/Teutonic punk of Paris Suit Yourself; the powerhouse gutbucket soul of Moon; the Nigerian alternative jazzrock/folkcore of Otto Fischer(Derek Bailey); the electronica infused funk/rock of OMG; the sensually alternative soul of Salakida(D'wayne Wiggins); and special collaborations between the MuthaWit Orchestra and very special guests.
