Extra Guests at Gent Jazz Festival
Some of the artists at the Gent Jazz Festival (08.07-19.07.09, Bijloke) will invite interesting guests. For instance, Jos James invites Jef Neve as a special guest performer for his concert Friday July 17. Jos James released one of the most exciting albums in 2008 with his debut album The Dreamer. Last year, these men gave a great concert at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels and they will team up again for the Gent Jazz Festival. Also, on Friday July 10, alto and soprano saxophonist Gary Bartz joins the line-up of McCoy Tyner Trio feat. Bill Frisell. Last year, McCoy Tyner recorded the album Guitars with a few guest guitarists such as Bill Frisell.
At the 2009 Gent Jazz Festival, among others, the following artists will perform: BB King, Jamie Cullum, George Benson, Jamie Lidell, Marianne Faithfull, Brad Mehldau Trio, Randy Weston, Melody Gardot and Joe Jackson.
Laureates Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest Confirmed
On Thursday, July 9, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (BJO) will organize, together with the Gent Jazz Festival, the 5th edition of the BJO International Composition Contest. This composition contest features big band compositions written by composers under the age of 40. The laureates compositions will be interpreted by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra at the Gent Jazz Festival under the direction of the finalists themselves. An international jury will then select the winner of the contest. The four selected candidates are Masuda Sakiko (Japan), Jan Torkewitz (Germany), Veli-Matti Halkosalmin (Finland) and Nicolas Schriefer (Germany)
Project Augustinian Monastery Ghent
During the Ghent Festivities, the Gent Jazz Festival will work on a unique double concert around creations in the Augustinian Monastery Ghent (from July 18 up to July 25, Augustijnenkaai). Classical pianists Frederick Croene and Timo van Luijk will then build an installation of discarded pianos, which they will explore and play as one big instrument. Jazz drummer/percussionist/performer Eric Thielemans will create sound sculptures on a concert bass drum, a snare drum and a bicycle wheel. These concerts are given in the magnificent surroundings of the Augustinian Monastery Ghent. Tickets are available for only 5 euros via uitbureau, 09/233 77 88.
