Now in its third year, Jazz at the Rat, a free and unique series of live jazz jams on selected Thursday nights, gives students and faculty members of Tulane University's Jazz Studies program an opportunity to perform live with nationally-renowned jazz artists and local rising stars of New Orleans. Each musical showcase features special themes ranging from the timeless compositions of John Coltrane to a “Tap Jam" with rhythm tap artist Michela Lerman of New York.

Curated by jazz pianist and Jazz Studies instructor Jesse McBride, the concerts happen at Der Rathskellar, also known as “The Rat," a late night sports bar and nightclub-styled eatery in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life at Tulane. The series is presented by the Lagniappe Series of Newcomb-Tulane College Cocurricular Programs, and is designed to bring a greater appreciation of jazz music into students' everyday lives.

The season kicked off with a tribute to “The Music of Thelonious Monk" on September 23. The remaining concerts of the season include “The Music of Clyde Kerr Jr." featuring Jesse McBride and The Next Generation on September 30. The October 7 performance is a “Saxophone Colossus," devoted to the legacy of Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane. And the final performance of the fall 2010 season is a “Tap Jam" on October 28, featuring New York-based rhythm tap artist and one-woman percussion section Michela Lerman.

Each concert takes place from 8-10pm and is free and open to the public. For more information, email [email protected], call (504) 865-5728, or visit college.tulane.edu/jazzrat.html .
