About Rewind! 5:
The Rewind! concept is simple - a selection of artists, producers, and bands record new versions of classic, underground, or favorite tunes that inspired them. It's not just a blast from the past; it is also a look at the tracks that turn musicians, producers and DJs on, and an opportunity to give old tunes a new twist.
The 5th in our series of Rewind compilations features ALL exclusive tracks by 11 of our favorite artists. From ?uestloves' Randy Watson Experience to the hotly tipped J*Davey, the Rewind! 5 cover versions include everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Prince, The Beach Boys to the Sylvers.
As with Volume 4, this collection contains 100% cover versions made from scratch (no remixes or re-edits).
J*Davey use their punk-funk meets r'n'b flavor to conjure up a cover of one of their favorite tunes in Frank Zappa's “Dirty Love". The band is made up of former SA-RA collaborators (vocalist Jack Davey and keyboard player Brook D'Leau) and their track was personally approval by Gail Zappa. One of the East Coast's finest funk bands the El Michels Affair drop a nasty cover of Burt Bacharach's “Walk On By" (based on the version that Alicia Keys, Cypress Hill, and Hooverphonc all borrowed from Isaac Hayes when he covered Bacharach).
Partly based in London, and residing also in Atlanta of late, Daz-I-Kue from the Bugz In The Attic crew and Bloodfire fame comes through with a club-bound cover of Ben E. King's rare-groover “Spoiled." He features in-demand UK vocalists Bembe Segue and Colonel Red on the duet.
Representing Los Angeles Black Shakespeare creates a sun-blessed reggae cover of Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams". Stepping out from behind the decks of his famous ice-cream truck sound system (he and co-producer Aurelito restored a barely running 1969 ice cream truck, customized it with turntables, amps and speakers, and promptly named her Destiny) Shakespeare features vocalist Charlie Charles on the mic.
The Rebirth were favorites on Rewind 4 and return to volume 5 to rough up The Sylvers “Handle It". ?uestlove takes time-off from his busy schedule with The Roots to drop a Sting cover from his new Randy Watson Experience project. The collaboration includes James Poyser and Nikki Jean, and is inspired by their good friend J Dilla (R.I.P.)
Back after several years off the block, Finland's NuSpirit Helsinki return with a harder, bigger, more electronic sound and a cover of Led Zeppelin, and Germany's Henrik Schwarz gets minimal with his version of the percussionists Guem et Zaka's track “L'Abeille", a long time favorite DJ and production tool.
Psapp made one of our favorite albums of last year (and their music was quickly gobbled-up for USA TV including the soundtrack to ABC show Grey's Anatomy) and get to act on their feline inclinations with a version of “Ev'rybody Wants To Be A Cat." Denmark's (and new Ubiquity signing) Owusu and Hannibal round-out proceedings with a dreamy-folksy version of The Beach Boys “Caroline, No".
