Twitter to Stay Free, for Now

That's what you get for “thinking out loud." The owners of micro-blogging service Twitter have been doing just that for some time, publicly mulling over ways to monetize their popular free service.

Recent out loud speculation caused the blogosphere to explode, suggesting that the site was going to start charging users (companies, specifically) for the service, because, well, exploding is what the blogosphere does best.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone pulled back the reins on this one a bit this morning, in an official blog post, assuring users that the service would stay free. “It's important to note that whatever we come up with, Twitter will remain free to use by everyone--individuals, companies, celebrities, etc," wrote Stone. “What we're thinking about is adding value in places where we are already seeing traction, not imposing fees on existing services."

Adding value? Recent traction? What does this mean, exactly? Despite all of this out loud speculating, the company is staying tight-lipped. “We are still very early in the idea stage and we don't have anything to share just yet despite a recent surge in speculation. When we do, we'll be sure to let you know."
