The new Andy Hunter album, Think Like a Mountain, will be released October 30th, 2012. The album features Alex Sipiagin on Trumpet, Jason W. Marshall on Baritone Saxophone, Dave Kikoski on Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on Bass, and of course, the writing, arranging, and Trombone voice of Andy Hunter.
About Andy Hunter:
Andy Hunter is an exciting, bold musician deeply entrenched in the New York music scene. An experienced leader and highly in-demand side man, he performs around the world with high profile artists such as the 2010 Grammy Award-winning Mingus Big Band/Dynasty, Richard Bona, Nnenna Freelon, T.S. Monk's tentet, Dave Holland's Big Band (a 2005 Grammy winner), the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, and the 2-time Grammy winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Hunter is very active in New York City with bands ranging from Tommy Igoe's Birdland Big Band to the Bjorkestra, Snarky Puppy, or in other styles, Ochun and various popular Cuban, Colombian folkloric, salsa and funk bands. He is a prolific composer and highly awarded soloist, with credits such as first prize in the 2002 International Trombone Association Jazz Competition, the 2005 Antti Rissanen International Jazz Competition in Helsinki Finland and the ETW National Jazz Trombone Competition in Washington D.C. in 2006. He was also a popular finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz competition of 2003.
Originally from the small river town of Grayling, Michigan (located, notably, half way between the uniquely named cities of Paradise, Michigan, and Hell, Michigan), Hunter has since lived in Cleveland and Shanghai, and since 2004 has called Brooklyn, New York home. During the past several years alone his music has brought him to perform multiple times on every continent except Antarctica. In fall, 2012, he will be joining the world-renown WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany.
As both a sideman and a leader, his performing, composing, and arranging can be heard on numerous recordings and in a wide variety of musical styles (a selected discography is available at www.hunterandy.com/discography.html). Over the past decade, an earnest desire to share the truly international music of jazz with wider and wider audiences has found him as an advisor and M.C. for jazz festivals in the USA and China, and as a jazz educator on four continents. Recently he has been involved with growing frequency in teaching and performing on festivals in South and Central America, in such countries as Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Panama. He has served on the jazz faculty of Tri-C College in Cleveland and Rutgers University in New Jersey, where his students have been winning prizes and recognition at multiple major festivals.
Andy Hunter holds a M.M. in Jazz from Rutgers University where he was a student of Conrad Herwig, a B.Mus. from Oberlin Conservatory where he studied with Robin Eubanks, and is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. He also holds a B.A. in Chinese from Oberlin College.
