Trombonist Clifton Anderson will bring a stellar quintet to Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on Monday, February 2 to showcase his new CD Decade. The CD, which is being released January 27th, is Anderson's first for Doxy/Emarcy Records, and the Dizzy's engagement is his first as a bandleader not only in New York but in the U.S.
“Although I've performed as a leader in other parts of the world, this will be the first time I've appeared leading my own group in New York City," says Anderson, who for the past 25 years has traveled the world as Sonny Rollins's front-line partner. “I'm looking forward to playing my music here at Dizzy's, with a great supporting cast to help me mark the occasion."
The quintet includes tenor saxophonist Eric Wyatt and pianist Stephen Scott, both of whom are heard on “Decade"; virtuoso bassist Russel Blake, who's flying in from Los Angeles to make the show; and drummer Steve Williams, who recently relocated to New York from Washington, DC and is best known for his long association with the late Shirley Horn. “The music is intended to be uplifting so we will try to stay true to that," says Anderson. “The stage is set and I feel the time is right."
“Decade" is a welcome return to recording from one of the most accomplished trombonists working in jazz today. Clifton's previous record as a leader was 1996s “Landmarks," so “Decade" is his attempt at “encapsulating ten years of development, my perceptions and insights as a trombonist, producer, writer, and human being."
In addition to Wyatt and Scott, other musicians featured on the new CD are Kenny Garrett, Bob Cranshaw, Al Foster, Christian McBride, Larry Willis, and Kimati Dinizulu.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Clifton Anderson is an original member of Slide Hampton's The World of Trombones. He spent three years with the group in the late 1970s, and has also contributed to albums by jazz artists such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Geri Allen, Lester Bowie, McCoy Tyner, and Wallace Roney as well as to sessions by Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, and calypsonians Lord Nelson and the Mighty Sparrow. Clifton began his long professional association with Sonny Rollins in 1983, performing on the saxophonists “Sunny Days, Starry Nights" album. Recently, hes produced Rollins's Grammy-nominated Sonny, Please/i> and the just-released Road Shows, vol. 1, both for Doxy Records.
“I don't think there's anyone out there today who plays better trombone than Clifton," says Rollins.
