TRIOCRACY PERFORMS AT CORNELIA STREET CAFE JC Sanford, trombone; Andy Laster, Eb saxophones; Chris Bacas, Bb saxophones
February 16, 2004 (New York, NY) — Triocracy, an improvisational trio, will perform Sunday, March 13th, 2005 at 8:30 PM at the Cornelia Street Cafe (http://www.corneliastreetcafe.com). The Cornelia Street Cafe is located at 29 Cornelia Street, in the West Village neighborhood in Manhattan. Admission is $10 at the door with a 1-drink minimum.
Triocracy, consisting of trombonist and composer JC Sanford and saxophonists Andy Laster and Chris Bacas, has been in existence since 1998 when Sanford formed the group in Boston, MA. The character of the group is intended to be difficult to classify as the music crosses over defined genre lines. I like to describe the group as 'free-ish chamber jazz,'" Sanford says. On the whole, our repertoire is mainly spontaneous improvisation or tunes written as a vehicle for free improvisation, but there are some other flavors in the mix, including some works from the 'classical' and 'pop' worlds, along with a few jazz tunes where we actually improvise over traditional harmonies." Though an unorthodox instrumentation, the rhythm-sectionless ensemble is capable of maintaining rhythmic drive and variation through the players' musicality, both as individuals and as a collective entity. The group's CD, Triocracy, is available at CDBaby (http://www.cdbaby.com).
Sanford, also an established large ensemble composer and conductor, has performed with John Hollenbeck, Maria Schneider, Bruce Barth, George Schuller, and John McNeil. He has also had his works performed by his own big band, the Schumacher/Sanford Sound Assembly, along with the Dave Liebman Big Band, the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Latin Big Band, the BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra, and the Skyline Brass Quintet. Composer Andy Laster leads the groups Hydra and Lessness and is a founding member of the collective ensemble New & Used. He has also performed with such diverse artists as Dave Douglas, Julius Hemphill, Dave Taylor, and Lyle Lovett. Chris Bacas was a long time member of the Buddy Rich and Artie Shaw bands and has also worked with David Baker and Gunther Schuller.
