The Independence Day weekend may be synonymous with American music, but in Chicago that doesn't necessarily mean marches by John Philip Sousa (glorious though they are).

Free jazz, hard-core bebop, American popular song--that's how Chicago marks the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Among the highlights:

What's billed as an Independence Day Celebration will feature Chicago flutist Nicole Mitchell leading her magisterial Black Earth Ensemble. Mitchell long ago declared her independence from conventional musical thought, her work boldly merging classical technique with an avant-garde sensibility, freely improvised playing with carefully crafted compositions. Though Mitchell appears in far-flung ensembles, Black Earth, which she has led for a decade, stands at the center of her work.
