“a culinary as well as a cultural landmark" Mayoral Proclamation, City of New York 1987

The Songwriter's Beat Wednesday February 16 8:30pm

Roy Zimmerman Stephanie Winters - w/ Jody Redhage (cello) & Catherine Bent (cello) Thomas Channell - w/ Tomo Ito (vocals) & Nick Turner (guitar/vox) Susan D - w/Askold Buk (guitar)

Roy Zimmerman The Los Angeles Times says, “Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer." Tom Lehrer himself said, “I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs. And the lyrics actually rhyme, they don't just “rhyne." Joni Mitchell said, “Roy's lyrics go beyond poetry and become perfection." The satirical songwriter sings a compelling combination of socially conscious comedy and original music. It's Lenny Bruce meets Ani Difranco meets Phil Ochs in Brian Wilson's living room. Roy's two new albums, “Homeland" and “Security" are full of scathing amd tuneful satire, 23 Zimmerman originals. He's released one other solo CD called “Comic Sutra". The LA Weekly reports, “Removed from the Foremen, Zimmerman writes considerably more caustic stuff, attacking personal politics as well as international." http://royzimmerman.com

Stephanie Winters STEPHANIE WINTERS started learning the cello in the fourth grade in the Levittown, NY public school program. Later she graduated from Juilliard Pre-College (Diploma), Purchase College (BFA), and Columbia University (MA). Over the past 15 years she has played with a variety of songwriters on countless recordings and concerts across the US. Upcoming engagements include solo concerts in the NY area and concerts in North America, Europe, and Australia playing with Richie Havens. Her solo CD, Through the Storm, features “moody originals and dreamy covers of Miles Davis, Mahalia Jackson, and Bela Bartok" (Time Out New York) and is available at http://www.stephaniewinters.com.

Thomas Channell South African singer THOMAS CHANNELL was born in Sydney, Australia, but grew up close to Cape Town. He studied music and acting at the University of Stellenbosch and is currently studying in New York towards an MA in Arts Administration at Columbia University. He is a versatile performer who sings, plays piano, acts, writes music, lyrics and plays, and even dances (if need be). He has performed at all the major arts festivals in South Africa, and also in Berlin and New York. His first album Crowded Sunrise was released to great critical acclaim in South Africa in 2004 and the music ranges from calm ballades, to a pop-duet, rock, jazz, and has a very original sound. It is in English and Afrikaans. The songs draw on personal relationships and experiences, from traveling to working for Rape Crisis as counselor. Thomas Channell displays an infectious quality that is also vibrantly intelligent. Even his voice sounds just a little bit different, more emotive than your average super ambitious musical prodigy. -Peter Tromp, The Cape Times, July 2, 2004 Thomas Channell shines as the narrator and lead singer, funny and camp when he needs to be and as serious and butch when required. His voice is tremendous.- Rafiek Mammon, The Cape Argus, June 18, 2004

Tragedy leads to new scholarship fund:

As you may have read in the local papers, Nicole duFresne was murdered in the Lower East Side by a random mugging. She was an exceptionally vibrant, talented, compassionate and politically-conscious playwright, actress and human being. Jeffrey Sparks [Nicole Dufresne's fiance] and her family have set up a scholarship in her name at her alma mater, Emerson College, in Boston.

The scholarship will be awarded to a socially conscious female actor or playwright who is in financial need. You can learn more about Nicole and how to donate to the scholarship at http://www.NicoleduFresne.com.

Please spread the word so we can make this a significant scholarship, and always remember her life and work. If you would like to read more about the shooting, google “Nicole duFresne".
